How many words do learners save while they watch? 2026 data
Data from the FluentAI database, read on October 21, 2026. Last updated
Across 2,365 FluentAI learners from January 1, 2026 to September 30, 2026, the median learner saved 2.5 new words or phrases in each week they watched video. Learners who came back for 4 weeks or more saved a median of 15.6 a week.
A save is a word or phrase a learner clicked in the subtitles of a video and kept for review. The returning learners are 162 people with a median of 6 active weeks.

How we counted
- Window: saves made from January 1, 2026 to September 30, 2026, in UTC.
- Video only: saves on YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, Disney+ and Crunchyroll. Saves in the readers and on other web pages are not counted.
- An active week is a calendar week (Monday to Sunday, UTC) with at least one save. For each learner we divide saves by active weeks, then take the median across learners.
- A word saved again does not count twice. The language is the language of the saved word, so a learner of two languages counts once in each row.
- Excluded: staff, tester and deleted accounts, and saves with no language. Languages with fewer than 50 learners are left out.
- We read only totals and medians, with a read-only database query. No single learner's data is shown or kept.
What the number does not mean
- A save is not a learned word. It shows what a learner wanted to keep, not what they remember.
- Most learners were active for one week only, so the overall median mixes short trials with regular learners. The returning group is self-selected: people who save more are more likely to come back.
- These are FluentAI users who learn from video, not a sample of all language learners. Deleted words and deleted accounts are not in the counts.
- We do not yet report saves per hour of video: watch time is stored only since September 29, 2026, which is too short for a per-language number.
