Advanced workflow

Advanced language learners

At advanced level you understand most of what you watch and can follow native-speed content without leaning on subtitles. The remaining work is closing register gaps, refining accuracy, and converting passive recognition into active use.

Signs you're here

  • you can follow native-speed conversation without subtitles in familiar topics
  • new words feel rare, but register and idioms still surprise you
  • you want to produce, not just understand, the patterns you hear

What to do this stage

  1. 1Watch without subtitles first, then re-enable them only to verify.
  2. 2Mine sentences for register markers, fixed expressions, and connectors.
  3. 3Shadow short clips to convert recognition into production.
  4. 4Read transcripts after watching to catch what your ear missed.

A weekly routine

  1. 1Four to five immersion sessions across mixed genres.
  2. 2Two shadowing or production sessions on saved clips.
  3. 3One review session focused on register and fixed expressions.

Aim for 40-60 minutes per watching session at this stage.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • plateau watching: consuming content without saving or reviewing anything
  • avoiding harder registers like legal, political, or technical dialogue
  • skipping speaking practice because comprehension feels strong
